Our Advent book this year is “Christmas through the keyhole: Luke’s glimpses of Advent”, by Derek Tidball, and everyone is warmly encouraged to join in the journey together by buying a copy and reading the daily readings and reflections during the weeks of Advent through Christmas to Epiphany. The book looks at four wonderful “songs” in the early chapters of Luke’s gospel – those of Mary, Zechariah, Simeon, and the angels – and reflects on what they still mean for us today. Copies will be available for sale from the bookstall in church.
Accompanying that, each Wednesday evening in the Advent season, we will be providing a short Meditation, each starting at 7.00pm and lasting about 30-40 minutes. The first of these four meditations will be on 29th November.
We will use a scheme based on the shape of our Advent book “Christmas through the keyhole”:
29 Nov Jesus, the hope of the needy (The Song of Mary)
6 Dec Jesus, the redeemer of the world (The Song of Zechariah)
13 Dec Jesus, the joy of the earth (The Song of Simeon)
20 Dec Jesus, the light of the nations (The Song of the angels at Bethlehem)
We trust that these led meditations, using words and music, images and silence, will provide an opportunity during the week for people to pause and reflect on some of the great themes of the Advent season. December is usually a very busy month for people, and it’s good to keep our spiritual focus during the run-up to Christmas, as we prepare to celebrate the greatest gift of all.
Do join us for all or any of these – whichever you can be free for.
