There will be an open meeting on Wednesday 6th July at 8.00pm, where Marion White will speak about the organisation “Hope for Justice”, working to combat modern-day slavery. This is at Hazel Grove Baptist Church – all welcome.
On Saturday 25th June, we will be showing Rain Man a winner of 4 Oscars. It stars Dustin Hoffman as an autistic savant and Tom Cruise as his worldly and selfish brother. Refreshments from 6.30pm with film starting 7.00pm. All welcome
On Thursday, 9th June in the Legh Room, from 2 – 4 pm, we will be celebrating the 90th birthday of our Queen and 140 years of Mothers’ Union. Red, white or blue items would be welcomed for our stalls. Tickets are £2.50 (including a Cream Tea) and will be on sale after the 10.15 am service. Proceeds to MU Projects.
To celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, we are having a day of special services on Sunday 12th June. In the morning at 10.15am there will be an All-Age Communion. In the afternoon, at 3.30pm, there will be a service of Choral Evensong, followed by a Cream Tea! (No service at 6.30pm that day.) Do note the details, and be sure to come and celebrate with us!
We are hosting an open meeting here at Norbury on Sunday, 5th June at 3.00pm. Our MP William Wragg and Councillor Jon Twigge will be taking questions. All welcome. We also have copies of a short booklet “The EU Referendum: How should we decide” to borrow in the narthex – discussing principles, not giving instructions! Please borrow one, read and return.
Bishop Libby will be with us for our 10.15 service on Sunday 22nd May, along with Helen Howe (North West Regional Co-ordinator for Christian Aid) to mark the end of Christian Aid Week.
Beginning on 22nd May, there will be a series of sermons at the Sunday evening services on the subject of “The Minor Prophets”. These are the shorter prophetic books in the Old Testament: some of them familiar, like Jonah; others less so, like Obadiah. But there are some fascinating characters among them, all with important messages which still speak to us today. We will be looking at six of the twelve minor prophets. Very well worth getting to know!
As part of the Archbishops’ church-wide initiative, we are planning a Prayer Week starting 8th May.
Please sign up for this and make it really effective. It runs from 8th-14th May and is our contribution to the Archbishops’ C of E-wide initiative. Please sign up for one or more half-hour slot. See the sign-up sheets and other info in the narthex – including instructions on gathering prayer requests from others near you.
As part of the prayer week we hope to pray for the people on each road in the parish and the following link provides the information on the time slots for each road:
Two services are taking place on the evening of 5th May, Ascension Day.
As usual, we will be holding a Communion Service at 7.30pm to mark this important day in the church’s year, as we remember Christ’s return to heaven in glory, preparing the way for Pentecost (the coming of the gift of the Holy Spirit) 10 days later. Do join us for this.
Also that evening, a service is being held at St Mary’s Cheadle, to celebrate 150 years of Reader ministry. Readers are lay people licensed to preach and lead services, among other things. We’re very blessed to have four readers at Norbury – Alan Brown, Lynn Smith, Val Gilchrist and Richard Crocker. Please do pray for them and all the readers in our diocese at this time of celebration.
This special event features Murray McLachlan an internationally renowned concert pianist, along with students from Chetham’s School Of Music.
Do come and join us for what promises to be a delightful afternoon.
Date: Sunday 8th May
Tea & Cakes will be served afterwards.
We will be having a retiring collection towards our sound system if you would like to contribute at the end of the concert.
