Local Concern

It has been said that charity begins at home and we support two local Christian charities.

The Wellspring

The Wellspring (www.thewellspring.co.uk) is situated on Harvey Street in Stockport town centre and is a resource centre for homeless and disadvantaged people. The Wellspring is open 365 days a year, serving food from 11.30am – 2pm, and on Monday to Thursday evenings from 6.30pm – 8pm; and it actively engages with homeless people, providing advice and support, as well as referrals into housing or supported accommodation. Its paid staff have supported over 700 people into housing of some description; all of these people were sleeping rough on the streets of Stockport or Manchester at some time. It currently also provides Maths and English courses every Thursday afternoon, with many members gaining qualifications up to GCSE level.

Services are provided free of charge and The Wellspring is entirely dependent on donations from the general public, businesses, schools and churches. Gifts of food, clothing, bedding, toiletries and financial donations are always needed and welcomed. There is a container available at Norbury for you to donate any of the above goods*.

*The same container is used to collect gifts for both Wood Street Mission and Wellspring so please clearly mark which charity your donation is for.

The Wood Street Mission

The Wood Street Mission (www.woodstreetmission.org.uk) provides practical help to families in Manchester and Salford in the form of good-quality second-hand clothing, bedding and items of baby equipment. There are also annual appeals at Christmas, to provide families with new toys and non-perishable food parcels, and at Easter to provide Easter eggs. Norbury’s annual Toy Service is in support of the Christmas appeal. A container is always available at Norbury for you to donate any of the above items*.

Our Local Concern representative is Val Gilchrist.
Val writes: As Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few” (Luke 10:2). Recently I have been asked to coordinate the varied aspects of local community projects which members of Norbury Church are involved with, actively making this a mission in our midst. I hope to keep all interested persons up to date with what help may be required by the Wellspring Kitchen and Wood Street Mission, all of whom are constantly in need of support by gifts of money, furniture, clothing, toiletries and so on, and all of whom could use an extra pair of willing hands. Any help, no matter how small, would be gratefully received.”
